Look closely. What you see here is not a black poodle but a finely trimmed sheep! It is the result of a project by Lernert & Sander who were asked by Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant to take a photo of “a black sheep of the family”. The duo thought: “Is there a ‘black sheep’ in a family of black sheep?” They invited Dutch champion dog groomer Marieke Hollander to shave and groom a black sheep, turning it into a marvellous prize winning poodle!
Let’s hope that its extreme trim will enable this poor ‘black sheep’ to become a bit more popular amongst its black flock mates!
Update 31 October: I managed to get in touch with the groomer Marieke Hollander and ask her a couple questions!
It was a lot of work on the day of the photoshoot. It took 12 hours, including the grooming, to finally get the right pictures.
No, it was the first time I had to groom a sheep, so for preparations I went to a farm to practise. I did want to know how it felt, shaving a sheep.
At our grooming salon Agouti in the Netherlands, we groom every dog breed there is and specialize in poodle grooming and creative styling. Grooming the black sheep was a nice and very new experience.
